You know those chocolate advent calendars that are so much fun for kids (and adults-let’s be honest!) every December? Well, growing up I had one year after year, and I thought they were amazing. The best year was when the dog ate all of chocolates out of the calendar while we were out, and my parents scrambled to find me another one. If you’ve ever tried to find one after the start of December, then you know that it is no small task. My dad finally ended up tracking one down, and so did one of his co-workers, so I ended up with two. Two chocolates every day? Pure bliss.
All this to say that now that I have kids, I plan on carrying on the tradition. This year advent calendars were everywhere. Princess ones, teddy bear ones, Santa ones…all over the stores. I, however, decided against buying them early, so that Paige could come with me to a store and pick one out. You would think that from my childhood experience (read above) I would know that waiting to purchase the coveted advent calendars was not a good idea, but I figured we’d get in there before December and all would be fine.
Little did I know that the flu bug would hit our house the final days of November – hard. Between holding feverish kids and cleaning up all the grossness that comes along with the flu, advent calendars were the last thing on my mind. Until Sunday and Monday, when I searched not one, but 6 stores. All sold out. Tired of hearing cashiers tell me I should have bought them earlier, I came home defeated, and that’s when the idea came. Darrin saw the look in my eyes that told him I was about to give up altogether, and he said “Why don’t we make an advent closet?”. And so we did.
This is our advent closet. I am pretty sure we are probably one of the only families in history who has made one, and might I say – it is pretty awesome. Every morning after breakfast the kids get to check the advent closet, and inside they find a little gift all wrapped up in their gift bags. We then take a number off the front, and we know how many days are left until Christmas.
The kids love it. I still think it’s kind of funny seeing them open the linen closet to collect their presents that are hanging from the shelves that hold our towels. When we first started wrapping it, Paige thought that they would have to search through the towels every morning to find their surprise;) But it is a lot of fun, and the advent calendar (er….closet?) tradition continues another year!
In other news…
This little guy turned 2 yesterday, and he is definitely acting the part! He was sick this weekend, so we had a pretend birthday today and he was finally able to open presents and eat a cupcake. This silly picture is the only one I could sneak, but it is pretty cute:)
And this pretty little one sang in her very first Christmas production this morning, in front of the whole church. She loved every moment, and we are very proud:)
I hope you are enjoying your December so far, and have some time to slow down, love on your family, and remember the greatest wonder of all – that God gave His Son. Do you have any December traditions in your home? We’d love to hear about them!
Until next time,
